From the poem by the Roman poet Catullus in which he declares his anguished feelings to his lover, Lesbia.
Odi et amo. Quare id faciam fortasse requiris.
Nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.
Loose translation:
I hate and I love. You want to know why?
I don't know, but I can feel it, and it tears me apart.
